Expert Guidance

Dr. Kim Metcalfe, Ph.D.

I hold a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with an emphasis on Human Development across the lifespan, and a Master's degree in Psychology with an Emphasis in Child Development.  I served as a Tenured Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and Psychology, preparing more than 8,000 prospective teachers and caregivers to raise resilient, capable children and students. Now, as a Professor Emeritus of Moreno Valley Community College, I bring decades of academic expertise to helping parents, educators, leaders of organizations that serve youth, and policymakers better understand what children need and how to provide it.

BETTER UNDERSTANDING. BETTER SUPPORT. BETTER OUTCOMES.

When we understand what’s behind a young person’s behavior, we can respond in ways that better support their growth, confidence and well-being.

I start by listening and learning, taking the time to understand the young people you support, the challenges you’re facing and the environment around them. Then I bring that understanding together with research in child development and mental health to help identify what may be driving behavior and what can help.

Together, we turn those insights into practical strategies you can use to respond with confidence, strengthen relationships and create environments where young people can thrive.

COURSES

Using Homes and Classrooms to Build Extraordinary Youth

In this course, we'll explore four different care provider styles. One supports children in reaching their full potential. The other three risk impeding their healthy development. This journey shows you how to use your interactions to give children the opportunities they need to build the skills for extraordinary lives.

Disrupt Disruptive Behaviors with Trauma-Informed Practices

This course is an in-depth training for teachers who want to learn the skills, implement the practices and use tools to gain control of their classroom and get their sanity back. You’ll receive step by step instructions, scripts, examples, and templates to transform your classroom.

Before taking classes with Dr. Kim, I had a difficult time standing up for myself. Because of my own upbringing and divorce, I often thought something was wrong with me. After taking classes with Dr. Kim I realized that I matter, how I feel matters, and how I think matters.
